As the demand for leisure cruising increase, so does the need for cruise companies to constantly renew and reinvigorate their fleet.

When vessels, in particularly those with a high lightweight to displacement ratio – such as passenger cruise ships, undergo refurbishment, the lightship weight is expected to change and this will affect the carrying capacity, loading condition and stability of the vessel.

From March 13th to April 19th 2019, CARNIVAL SUNRISE (Ex. CARNIVAL TRIUMPH) underwent a major refurbishment project in the Navantia Cadiz Shipyard, Spain. TMC was instructed by Carnival Cruise Lines to act as their external weight control engineer for the project. The task involve verifying and tracking changes to the lightship weight and centre of gravity.

Charles Yuen from TMC Singapore Office was on site from the project commencement through to the completion of the project. He provided regular feedback to the Naval Architect and Refurbishment Team of Carnival Cruise Line on the weight changes. He also attended the inclining test done to the refurbished vessel at the end of the drydock.

TMC was involved in two other lightweight surveys in 2018, Christina Douka from the TMC London Office attended CARNIVAL ELATION and CARNIVAL PARADISE in Freeport, Bahamas.
