John joined TMC Marine Consultants Ltd after 26 years seagoing experience sailing on a variety of ship types. This included general cargo ships, reefer ships, passenger ships, dry bulk carriers and combined RoRo /container ships which included 8 years in command.

After coming ashore John was based in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia for 9 years working in operations as cargo planner and Port Captain for the Middle East region with the National Shipping Company of Saudi Arabia for 1 year before joining a local marine survey company. He returned to the United Kingdom, joining CF Spencer & Co. Ltd., as a surveyor and consultant, and becoming a director. During this time John also worked as Assistant Harbour Master and then Harbour Master for the Port of Bridgwater and was a licensed pilot on the River Parrett.

John has prepared, and assisted in the preparation of expert reports on personal injury, fatalities, industrial disease linked with asbestos, stowaways, shipboard incidents including accidents, seamanship and navigational aspects, fishing vessel accidents and injuries, vessel loss, heavy weather cargo damage and loss, and speed and consumption claims.

John’s speciality lies in RoRo operations, heavy lift, project, container, dry bulk and general cargoes. His other experience includes a wide variety of vessels including RoRo /container carriers, general cargo ships, dry bulk carriers, reefer cargo vessels, passenger ships, fishing vessels, work boats and small craft.

John has been cross-examined at arbitration in the UK and has given evidence in court in Khartoum, Sudan as well as being deposed on several occasions in the United States of America.

John joined TMC as a consultant surveyor in July/August 2013 and has continued consultancy work with TMC since retiring in 2019.
