21st May 2019
The deadline for implementation of (EU) 1257/2013 regulations of the European Parliament on ship recycling for IHM (Inventory of Hazardous Materials) is 31st December 2020.
An IHM manual is a document in which all potentially hazardous material onboard a vessel that can pose a risk to the health and safety of people or to the environment is located, identified and quantified.
Regulation (EU) 1257/2013 includes the requirement for vessels to have in place an IHM manual and applies to all European flagged vessels (>500GT) and also those vessels of non-EU flag trading to European ports.
It is estimated the number of ships involved is around 35,000 and less than 2,000 ships have been certified so far.
In anticipation of the escalated demand for certified IHM Surveyors, BV Solutions Singapore organised an IHM Training on the 14 – 17 May 2019, which Ian Duncan and Charles Yuen of the TMC Singapore office attended.
The course, conducted by Mr. Toby Brooks from Bureau Veritas, included three days of classroom and practical sessions, culminating with a session onboard a vessel under repair at a shipyard on the fourth day.
Elements of IHM including project planning, required PPE, usage of BV Proprietary IHM App Praxis and hands on sampling / bagging techniques were introduced during the sessions.
