Gilmark D Mello, a Chartered Marine Engineer (CMarEng) with a First Class Certificate of Competency, joined TMC in September 2024. He has 20 years of seagoing experience and has sailed on various vessels including large container ships, gas carriers, bulk carriers, general cargo ships and passenger ships.
Having sailed as Chief Engineer for 9 years, Gilmark stepped ashore in the role of Consultant, Business Transformation where he worked within the Business Transformation team to optimise operational processes of the shipping company to achieve reliability in operations, at a crucial juncture where the company was poised for a large expansion of the fleet.
He then went on to take up the role of Health, Safety, Environment and Quality (HSEQ) Manager with a leading company in London that owns and operates high-speed crafts. This role within the Risk, Safety and Compliance Department led him to manage the safety and compliance of operational processes, facilitating inspection and surveys of vessels, develop and implement an Environmental Management System (EMS)(ISO 14001:2015) encompassing the regulatory compliance requirements and net-zero plans, while also carrying out investigations of technical failures, incidents and accidents, and their root cause analysis in writing investigation reports.
He then joined a leading Classification Society in London as a Senior Sustainability Specialist where he utilised his extensive maritime technical expertise in working on projects and consulting clients on the viability and safety aspects of maritime decarbonisation pathways. This role led him to harness his maritime expertise into various projects on maritime decarbonisation including onboard carbon capture and alternative fuels, development of training and competency standards for seafarers on alternative fuelled ships and consulting for clients on decarbonisation pathways and maritime regulations.
Gilmark has a broad maritime experience encompassing technical expertise, maritime standards, risk management, technical failure analysis, accident investigation and maritime decarbonisation. His cumulative knowledge and experience enable him to understand the operational risks of vessels and critically analysing technical operations on ships including ships with prospective alternative fuels and novel technologies, and root cause analysis of technical failures, incidents and accidents.
