Jeremy P. Ayling is a vastly experienced master mariner with a specific and unparalleled knowledge of the container sector having served as master onboard a wide variety of vessels over a 25 year period.
Jeremy first went to sea in 1978 serving with Houlder Brothers shipping company before the group was taken over by the Tung Family shipping group (Hong Kong) in 1979. Between 1978 and 1982 he sailed on all types of vessel including Bulk Carriers, Tankers, Gas ships, General Cargo, Reefer Container, & Ice Classed Container ships.
In December 1982, having obtained a Class 3 Deck Officer licence, Jeremy transferred to the Hong Kong office and started to sail exclusively on container ships – later to become known as Orient Overseas Container Lines “OOCL” when they became a stock market listed company.
Having risen through the ranks and being appointed Master in November 1994, Jeremy spent several periods working in the Head Office writing manuals and training books for the company’s preparation for ISM and STCW compliance.
Between 1998 and 2003 Jeremy was employed by TMC Marine Consultants in London, providing consultancy services in relation to expert witness matters and accident investigations, principally for container ship work including IMDG incidents and fires, stow collapses, new building disputes, performance disputes etc.
Between 2003 and 2019 Jeremy re-joined the Tung group in Hong Kong and worked as Master globally on all sizes of container vessels including Ice Classed vessels. During this time Jeremy worked for the newbuilding department of OOCL in Hong Kong and in their on-site offices at Geoje Samsung shipyard in South Korea. Jeremy’s duties included plan and contract approval, inspections, sea trials and delivery of container vessels ranging from the old Panamax sized (Around 4,500TEU – 15 vessels), 12 x 8,500TEU sized vessels, to the new Panamax sized (Around 12,500TEU – 10 vessels) and most recently 6 x vessels of around 23,000TEU.
At the time of writing Jeremy holds a valid British Class 1 (Deck) CoC Master Mariner concurrently with a Hong Kong Class 1 (Deck) Licence. My last refresher training for STCW courses was completed in March 2016.
Jeremy rejoined TMC in 2019 and is active across a wide variety of consultancy including all types of container matters, navigation incidents and related disputes.
